The taste of this triumph was delicious. ‘Sweeter than normal,’ said Dwan Hurt, the coach of Gardena Serra boys’ basketball.

Hurt’s unranked Cavaliers chewed up No. 16-ranked -- and backyard foe -- Bishop Montgomery for the second time this season. This time it was a 75-70 victory as Donte Archie had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Hakeem Washington added 15 points and nine assists. Serra (19-4, 6-0) also clinched at least a tie for the Del Rey League title.

‘My players were wondering why they’re not ranked, and I told them that it’s only the rankings in the end that matter,’ Hurt said.

And that’s exactly right.
