USC is already attracting a formidable group of football recruits for the class of 2009, with All-City receiver De’Von Flournoy of Birmingham the latest to make a commitment even though he can’t sign a letter of intent until February of 2009.

Flournoy’s mother, Jena Sexton-Gumbs, confirmed Sunday that her son accepted a scholarship offer from USC Coach Pete Carroll on Saturday during the Trojans’ junior day. ‘It’s right in our backyard,’ she said of the university.

Flournoy should make a fabulous target for another USC recruit, junior quarterback Matt Barkley of Mater Dei.

Taking Flournoy off the recruiting market is a big deal. It denies new UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel an opportunity to make a bid at one of the most exciting receivers in the Southland.

Scout.com is also reporting that USC got a commitment from junior running back Patrick Hall of Ventura St. Bonaventure. Hall was the backup to Darrell Scott this season and also played defensive back.
