Roosevelt baseball Coach Scott Pearson said Monday that All-City pitcher Martin Villanueva could be returning to the team after a professional contract he signed with the Mexico City Reds last fall was declared null and void in a ruling by the National Assn. of Professional Baseball Leagues.

Villanueva, a senior left-hander, would have to apply to have his amateur status reinstated by the City Section. More difficult could be gaining eligibility through his academic standing. He has to return to the year-round school, where hasn’t attended fulltime since the winter break in October. Pearson said he was trying to contact Villanueva in Mexico.

‘If I had to guess, he’s definitely going to be back,’ Pearson said.
