Washington has sought a signature victory for its girls’ basketball program the past two seasons. Well, the Generals got it Wednesday, rallying from a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to upset visiting Narbonne, 48-47, and deadlock the Marine League title race.

Washington (25-3, 10-1) may have done more than end the Gauchos’ 15-game winning streak. The Generals may have also handed the City Championship Division’s top-seeded position to Chatsworth, assuming the Chancellors finish the West Valley League season undefeated.

If both Narbonne (23-4, 10-1) and Washington remain tied after their Friday games, a coin flip will determine the first place team for seeding purposes. Should the Gauchos lose the coin flip, the top-seed spot in the playoffs definitely goes bye-bye. But there are no guarantees for Narbonne if it wins the coin flip.

Right now, Washington Coach Ricky Blackmon is happy to end, in his words, ‘a 12-year losing streak’ to Narbonne.

‘The win brought a sense of pride and togetherness,’ Blackmon said. ‘But I believe losing to them the first time [at Narbonne] actually gave us more confidence. We felt like we could have beaten them that day. It gave us the confidence to play the way we did on Wednesday.’
