Girls’ basketball: Once unranked, Millikan is now a co-champ

Nobody could have prognosticated this. Not the best soothsayer on the Venice boardwalk. Not Dionne Warwick and all her psychic friends. Not even the Lords of Basketball, uh, whoever they are.

The Millikan girls’ basketball team, which began the season unranked, now has a chunk of the Moore League crown, sharing it with the top-ranked Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits, whom most pundits christened as league champs before a ball had been dribbled this season.

But the No. 2-ranked Rams nearly let the title slip away as they trailed Thursday night by 12 points entering the fourth quarter against Long Beach Wilson. Millikan tied it up at regulation’s end, then won in overtime, 45-37, leaving Coach Lorene Morgan to say: ‘We don’t want to lose our share of the league championship.’

And they didn’t.
