Wild Card round reminds me of Lady Liberty

Just checked out the basketball wild card seedings and thought back to a really killer poem: Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses... uh... um... yada, yada, yada.

I don’t remember the rest. I’m a sports writer, not some history goober.

Point is, wild card teams might be tired of body. May be poor of victories. And are certainly huddled masses, which need one more win to earn an official invitation to the Big Dance -- the Southern Section division tournament.

So, don’t forget, the boys’ wild card round is on Wednesday night; the girls’ on Thursday.

Just did some Googling and found out who scribbled that cool poem -- some lady named Emma Lazarus and the poem’s called ‘The New Colossus.’ And get this, it’s engraved on a bronze thingamajiggy at the base of the one, the only... Statue of Liberty.

Maybe I’m a history goober after all.
