A tragic reminder that driving’s not all fun and games

Finally back into preps after spending a few days at the drag races. For those of you who were working on their game or making sense of the pairings, they missed a spectacular accident, and a poignant story.

The latter was the tale of Doug Herbert, who was racing for the first time since his two sons were killed instantly in a car crash. The driver, Jon, was 17, and lost control of his Mazda 3 doing about 80 mph in a 45 mph zone and slammed nearly head-on into a Hummer. His brother, James, 12, was also killed. Fortunately, passengers in the other vehicle did not sustain life-threatening injuries, which was lucky for everyone.

Doug Herbert’s focus now is on convincing high school-aged children about the need for caution while driving. It’s a brutal reminder: Be careful. You’re not invincible.
