Of all the boys’ basketball teams playing wild-card playoff games tonight in Southern Section Division I-A, I’d say Los Osos has the best chance to reach, say, the quarterfinals.

The Grizzlies may have finished fourth in the Baseline League, but it was as top heavy this winter as the surrounding snow-capped mountains.

They also have one of the best sophomores around in Kendall Williams, who has already committed to UCLA. Williams, a 6-foot-3 point guard, is averaging 18.4 points and 5.1 assists.

In December, Los Osos played Harvard-Westlake and won by seven points. That’s the same Harvard-Westlake that belongs to the Mission League, where even the equipment guy from each school wears a coat and tie, and technologically savvy alumni are quick to bash those who question the league’s talent level.

Los Osos (17-11) will host Arlington (14-11) tonight at 7:30. Though the Lions won eight of their first 11 games this season, their lack of height probably caught up to them, since they don’t have a player taller than 6 feet 4.
