Fairfax Coach Judi Edwards probably didn’t exhale until the last seconds ticked off of the Lion’s 53-50 victory over visiting Crenshaw in a first round game of the City Championship playoffs.

The Western League champion Lions (25-7), seeded fourth, saw a 34-21 third quarter lead turn into a 48-45 deficit with four minutes left in the fourth quarter before they rallied to win. The closeness of the final score was further proof to Edwards the 13th seed given to the Cougars (13-6) was too low.

‘I was concerned about them from the time they walked into the gym,’ Edwards said. ‘They may have been [the Coliseum League’s] second place team but their only two league losses were to league champion View Park.’

What also has to cross Edwards’ mind was this may be the easiest playoff game the Lions get. Tuesday’s quarterfinal game is against defending champion Taft, seeded fifth. If Fairfax gets past the Toreadors, a showdown with top seed Chatsworth looms in the semifinals on Feb. 21.

All that just to get to the title game on March 1.

‘Our path to the championship game is the hardest,’ Edwards said. ‘But I think our girls are ready.’
