Carpinteria Coach Mike Carey sounded a little dumbfounded when I talked to him on the phone Friday afternoon. You could tell he was a little shocked his second-seeded boys, straight off a Tri-Valley League title, lost to wild-card entry Azusa, 1-0, in the opening round of the Division V boys’ soccer playoffs.

‘We outplayed them the entire team, but they were the ones who scored,’ Carey said. ‘It’s kind of unfortunate, but that’s how things go sometime.’

Azusa’s Juan Orresquieta scored the lone goal on a penalty kick and, as Carey put it, ‘they scored on really their only big opportunity of the game.’

So are there any other SF Valley/North region favorites left in the Division V title race? Tri-Valley League runner up Oaks Christian kicked its way to a 3-0 victory over Windward on Friday, but I’d be surprised if they can outlast talented teams such as Pasadena Marshall and top-seeded Salesian.
