In only its second year of varsity competition, spankin’ new Sierra Canyon has clinched an automatic berth for the Southern California Regional playoffs. Thanks to its 62-16 blowout victory over Connelly on Saturday in Division V-A , the Trailblazers, along with Mesa Grande Academy, were the only state Division V teams to win in the second round, thereby getting the automatic nod.

A Southern Section selection committee will choose two of the seven second-round losers (Calvary Baptist, Liberty Christian, Lone Pine, Noli Indian, Packinghouse Christian, South Bay Lutheran and Southwestern Academy) to advance to the Southern California Regional once the Southern Section playoffs are finished.

It’s great to see a new program such as Sierra Canyon establish itself as one of the better small-school programs in the San Fernando Valley. But the Trailblazers aren’t going to be steamrolling anybody else from here on out. Wednesday’s quarterfinal against Aundrea Dava and the rest of the visiting Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian hoopsters isn’t going to be easy, even though I’m picking Sierra Canyon to take this one.
