Freshmen are expected to sell programs at boys’ varsity basketball games, push in the bleachers afterwards and then discreetly meet their parents by the phone booths. The ones that don’t have cellphones, that is.

They most certainly aren’t expected to score 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead their team to a postseason victory.

Nobody must’ve reminded Gelaun Wheelwright of Corona Centennial, who scored all but two of his 17 points in the final quarter Tuesday night to lead the second-seeded Huskies to an 80-64 victory over host Moreno Valley in a Southern Section Division II-A second-round game.

Wheelwright, a 6-foot-1 freshman guard, scored 13 of the first 15 points in the fourth quarter as Centennial extended its lead from one point to seven.

That’s pretty impressive considering it was a tight game and the Huskies have a solid No. 1 scoring option in senior guard Shannon Sharpe, who is averaging nearly 18 points.

You think Kobe would let Jordan Farmar take over a close game like that?

Centennial now travels to eighth-seeded Canyon Springs for Friday’s quarterfinal. The entire team should be charged up for this game, as Canyon Springs defeated the Huskies, 76-73, in a nonleague game Jan. 14.
