Capistrano Valley is owning Mater Dei in their Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal boys’ basketball game....in the student section that is.

On the court, it has been all Monarchs in the first half. Mater Dei leads, 40-17, making me wonder if I should have left my engine running and the heater on so I can make an early exit.

Oh yeah, I have to suffer through this thing in its entirety.

The Cougars accomplished one thing in the second quarter, and that was keeping Mater Dei sophomore guard Gary Franklin off the scoreboard. They did, however, leave junior forward Andy Brown wide open and he and Franklin each have a team-high 13 points. The Monarchs made nine of 12 three pointers, making me believe the Mater Dei folks turned a couple screws on the rims before the game.

I can only imagine what’s happening in the locker rooms. Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight is probably on the phone with Dominoes and Capistrano Valley Coach Brian Mulligan is probably scouring the student section for tall bodies.
