Girls’ soccer: Mater Dei back in Div. I semis

Mater Dei upset No. 2 Esperanza, 2-1, in the Southern Section Division I quarterfinals on Friday. The game-winning goal was by scored by sophomore Jackie Linnert with two minutes left in regulation.

The defending-champion Monarchs (14-3-9) will host No. 3 San Clemente (23-3-6) -- which beat Marina, 2-0, in the other quarterfinal -- on Tuesday in the semifinals.

The game will likely be part of a doubleheader with the boys’ team, which is scheduled to play host to Trinity League rival Santa Margarita on Tuesday. An official decision has not been made, but that is the most likely scenario, Mater Dei girls’ soccer Coach Matty West said.
