Losing back-to-back games heading into the Southern Section playoffs wasn’t the ideal way to build momentum for a run toward a championship, but it worked for the St. Bonaventure boys’ basketball team. An appearance in Friday’s Division V-A finals against Rosamond is proof the setbacks were, merely a setback for the Seraphs.

St. Bonaventure stumbled in the final two games of the regular season, falling to Mission Prep and Malibu back in early February before turning things around 10 days later and winning its postseason opener against Laguna Blanca. Lopsided victories over Marywood-Palm Valley and Desert followed, by an average of 27 points, and restored some much-needed confidence.

‘We’ve been on notice since the playoffs started,’’ Seraphs Coach Marty Meyer said. ‘We knew there were plenty of teams capable of getting us, capable of sending us home early with a loss and that wasn’t going to happen after we ended the regular season so poorly. We’ve been playing ornery ever since, with a chip on our shoulders.’’

It appears as if the late season swoon is a mere afterthought at this stage of the game. And if it’s not, there’s sure-fire way to erase the memory. All second-seeded St. Bonaventure needs to do is defeat top-seeded Rosamond to put a rest to any lingering issues about the pair of losses earlier this month.
