... but I’m sure the Golden Bears and their fans won’t mind reading it one more time: Temecula Valley have eight wrestlers taking part in this weekend’s CIF state championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

That’s two more state participants than Coach Arnold Alpert’s team sent in 1998, when the squad had four placers and took fourth in the team competition, both school bests.

(FYI: Five Counties champion Poway from the San Diego Section qualified 12 wrestlers for the state tournament this year).

Former Temecula Valley wrestler Ryan Kane also won one of his two individual titles in 1998. Alpert feels his current squad has the talent to bring home one or more state titles as well. The leading candidates to accomplish such a task would be Masters champions Erik Reyes at 103 and Jake Meredith at 171. Meredith took seventh at state last season.

‘It takes a good tournament,’ Alpert said. ‘We’re definitely capable of it.’
