Magic Johnson showed up midway through the first half of Saturday’s City Section championship game at the Sports Arena, just in time to catch the show being put on by Larry Drew. The Taft senior scored 12 points and added five rebounds and three assists to give the top-seeded Toreadors a 33-25 lead over third-seeded Fairfax at the half.

Drew had seven points early on as Taft jumped out to a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. He’s had some help, too. Teammate Justin Hawkins has eight points and Michael Williams came off the bench and hit a pair of three-pointers.

Renardo Sidney, on the other hand, has been rather quiet for the Lions. The highly-touted junior has a mere four points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field and four turnovers. Chris Solomon has kept Fairfax somewhat close with eight points thus far.

Bye the way, Magic left his courtside seat at intermission, most likely to avoid the halftime crowd. He’s back though, just in time to catch the second half.
