Girls’ soccer: San Clemente wins...

...and so does Thousand Oaks. I’ll explain why this is relevant in a bit.

The Tritons used their superior speed and technique to beat Woodland Hills El Camino Real, 3-2, Thursday on the first day of the Southern California Regional tournament. The game wasn’t as close as the score would indicate . The Conquistadors, the eight-time City Section champions, were outshot and outplayed by the younger Tritons.

Freshman Frannie Coxe had the goal of the game with an awesome curving shot from about 20 yards right before halftime. The goalkeeper, caught out of position, could only turn and watch as the ball hit the inside part of the post and bounce in. Coxe is the Tritons’ scoring leader in the postseason.

San Clemente will host Thousand Oaks after its stunning 1-0 victory over No. 1 Torrey Pines on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Division I semifinals. Torrey Pines had not lost a game the last two seasons and was ranked No. 1 in the nation by at least one publication.
