Boys’ volleyball: Valencia out to prove itself this weekend

I knew there were high expectations for Valencia this season, but I didn’t realize the Vikings were ranked No. 1 in the nation by StudentSportsVolleyball.com until I read this.

Led by the UCLA-bound Jamey Ker and UC Santa Barbara-bound Jake Piva, Valencia is the early-season favorite for the Division I title. And the Vikings’ performance in this weekend’s Best of the West Invitational down in San Diego County should offer a good barometer as to where this team stands -- especially if they meet up with Mira Costa (ranked second in the nation) in the championship final on Saturday.
