Boys’ soccer: Two down, one to go

Santa Monica got its cake and ate it too. Or something like that, an elated Santa Monica Coach Frank Gattell tried to say after his Vikings beat Poway, 2-1, in sudden-death overtime, to win the Southern California Regional Division I title at Warren High.

Juan Magana scored the winner and then hurt his shoulder during the ensuing celebration.

He didn’t seem to mind the dinged wing when I asked him about.’It was worth it,’ he said.

Magana scored the goal with five minutes left before the match went into penalty kicks. The goal came off of a deflection, but it was a goal nonetheless.

Two games are done here and only one more to go -- the Division II final between Santa Margarita and San Diego Cathedral. I picked Santa Margarita to win, but my picks haven’t been doing so well today. Maybe I’ll talk about that later. Maybe not.
