Not sure if the Escondido Calvin Christian girls’ basketball team was nervous or intimidated about being on the big stage in Saturday’s Southern California Regional Division V championship game at Mater Dei High, or if Mission Prep was simply much, much better. Got a funny feeling it was the latter.

The Royals used a stifling full-court defense to open up a 13-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended the advantage to 24-8 at halftime, essentially breaking the spirit of the Crusaders. Margaret Cowitz has a game-high eight points thus far for Misison Prep.

It will be interesting to see if Calvin Christian has any fight left in it during the second half.
