Everyone on The Times’ preps sports desk pretty much knew we weren’t going to make deadline after it took three overtimes for Mira Costa to beat Ayala, 72-64, for the Southern California Regional Division II championship on Saturday afternoon. Our deadline had already been pushed up thanks to the ol’ time change and we all knew there was no chance the other games would end early.

Nevertheless, this was the most memorable game of the day, as far as I was concerned. Mikah Maly-Karros’ 27-point, 20-rebound gem was a spectacular sight, and Ayala’s fourth-quarter comeback on the wings of Ariel Marsh’s heroics was great.

In addition, the Mustangs’ third consecutive overtime triumph marked the first girls’ basketball OT victory in Southern California Regional final history. Nice.
