The opening day and night of the state boys’ basketball championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento on Friday ought to bring out Northern California’s UCLA fans en masse to watch two of its most decorated incoming recruits, Campbell Hall’s Jrue Holiday and Archbishop Mitty’s Drew Gordon (pictured).

Holiday will try to lead his team to its third state Division IV title in four years with a 1:30 p.m. game against Albany St. Mary’s.

Gordon, 6-foot-9, was supposed to be out for the season after breaking his foot in January, but he has returned and is dunking and blocking shots. He faces Mater Dei in an 8 p.m. showdown that might be the best game of championship weekend.

reGordon scored 20 points in 22 minutes on Saturday, setting up a rematch of last year’s Division II final between 32-1 Mitty and 34-1 Mater Dei. Last season, Mater Dei won in overtime, 69-64.

Check here for a YouTube dunk by Gordon and here for a video glimpse of Holiday’s talent.

If UCLA wasn’t playing in the Pacific 10 tournament this week, Coach Ben Howland would certainly have made the trip to Sacramento.
