The Division II girls’ state final is playing out just like last season’s, all the way down to Mira Costa’s green uniforms.

The Mustangs went into the third quarter with a six-point lead and came out with two of their best players in serious foul trouble and trailing by six.

Mikah Maly-Karros picked up her second and third fouls early in the third quarter for Mira Costa, but stayed on the floor as San Jose Mitty chipped away at the free-throw line. She was then whistled for her fourth with 1:12 remaining in the third, went to the bench and now the Monarchs trail, 36-30, heading into the fourth quarter at Arco Arena.

She’ll start the fourth quarter.

In last year’s game, it was Brea Olinda’s best player, Jeanette Pohlen, who picked up her second and third fouls in the third quarter, went to the bench and by the time she came back in, Mitty was ahead for good. I’ll remind you one more time, Brea Olinda was whistled for 12 fouls in the third quarter of that game, Mitty had none, and was outscored, 17-5, before losing, 54-49.

I’m afraid these championship games, with Northern California much more represented in the stands than Southern California, might be a little too intimidating for some of these refs to handle.
