El Camino Real didn’t get the abbreviated game it could have had Saturday against North Torrance in Redondo tournament pool play. The Conquistadores built a 10-1 lead against the Saxons after three innings, but did not score again, so the mercy rule was not invoked.

Along with being pleased with his offense, Coach Vinnie Orlando may have found a third pitcher. Greg Burtch (1-0) got the start for ECR and threw five innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Orlando had been looking for another quality arm behind Michael Booth and Josh Derry, not only for the upcoming Durango tournament in Las Vegas during spring break -- which includes other Valley teams Chatsworth, Cleveland and San Fernando -- but the ultra-competitive West Valley League.

Burtch made a favorable impression.

‘Our team is based on pitching and defense, and it all starts on the mound,’ Orlando said. ‘This was sort of an audition for Greg. We need someone who can pitch relief during the week and Saturday tournament games. This was a good win for him and for us.’
