I spoke to Chris Francis a bunch of times during the season. Each time, he brought up his wife -- how she had major surgery, how basketball seemed less important and how he needed to be near her more. So I wasn’t surprised when I heard the news that Francis resigned as head coach of the Centennial boys’ basketball team.

He cited personal reasons for leaving: his wife and his desire to finish up some school.

After seven successful seasons as the King-Drew coach, Francis took over the Apaches this year, inheriting an inexperienced squad, which lost 11 seniors. Didn’t matter. Francis led them to a 16-11 record and a tie for first place with a 6-4 record in the Pioneer League.

Good luck, Coach, in your non-basketball pursuits.
