Softball: Long Beach Wilson escaping some shadows

In Bruin Land, the Wilson baseball team gets the props. Gets the pub. Gets the ogling eyes of baseball scouts everywhere.

The softball team? Maybe in the shadows a smidgen. Not so much around here in L.A. Times Land. (Man, that’s fun! Just put ‘land’ after each place!)

Martin Henderson -- our samurai master of softball ratings, you could say -- bumped the Lady Bruins (7-3) into The Times’ top 25 this week, slotting them at No. 15.

What’s going right at Wilson? The Bruins simply bash, averaging almost nine runs per game. The centerpiece of their assault has been third baseman Jessica O’Donnell (.567 average, two homers and 11 RBI).

Now, let’s see if they continue to climb the rankings -- and escape the shadows.

OK, I gotta get back to Dork Land!
