Tonight is a night of ogling eyes from college coaches, scouts and fans galore. Tonight is also a night of Jerry Maguires.

You can guarantee scads of sports agent will shuffle into Milwaukee’s Bradley Center and drool over the Big Macs running some ball in the 2008 McDonald’s All-American Game. You can also guarantee a few of these sport-jacketed dudes will paint on glossy smiles and glad-hand the moms and dads of the All-Americans. They may be unethical. They may be obnoxious. They most certainly will be tacky, working the schmooze, slipping off biz cards, piling on the cheese.

You think I’m crazy? Just check out this agent’s quote about tonight’s players: ‘We’re a year ahead of the process,’ the agent told the Washington Post. ‘Kids who you are probably going to approach a year from now, you want to have a feel for what they do and how the conduct themselves. It’s a pretty good education.’

That remarks leads me back to one of my favorite films. Remember what football player Rod Tidwell screamed to agent Jerry Maguire? Of course you do. ‘Show me the money!’ If you think about it, that’s really what the agent’s thinking, and they start thinking it during a game like tonight’s.
