Earlier today, as I hunkered down for my first baseball game this season, I waxed -- uh, blogged -- poetic about our national pastime. I rhapsodized about the sights and sounds and sunflower seeds. Next time I do that, just tell me to save the ‘baseball is life’ metaphors for the National Baseball Geek Convention.

To be honest, here is the underbelly of today’s game: my eyelids have a sunburn, my lips feel shriveled up from all the salty seeds and my head is throbbing from the migraine-inducing 405. Oh, and my back’s stiffened up like a rotted-out plank -- man, those bleachers stink.

At least the game was good.

I drove down to watch the throwing arm of Kyle Petter, one of the top-rated lefties in the Southland and ace for No.19-ranked West Torrance (10-2). Petter pitched four scoreless innings and struck out 10 in the Warriors’ 2-0 nonleague victory over Newport Harbor. He fanned the side in his final inning with fastballs, which topped out at about 90 mph, I’m guessing. He showcased a nice curve here and there, too.

I’ll be checking back with Petter and the Warriors later this season.

And now I’ll be checking out the medicine cabinet -- I need some Advil.
