We’re going to learn plenty about who the contenders and the pretenders are in West Valley League play this week as perennial front-runners Chatsworth and El Camino Real square off in a pair of games and Cleveland takes on a seemingly resurgent Taft group.

El Camino Real opened league play with two victories over Granada Hills and can put some much-needed distance between itself and the Chancellors, a long-time rival, with a win Wednesday at home or Friday on the road. Both games start at 3 p.m. Plan on getting to the field early, the stands figure to be packed.

Cleveland is in the same boat as the Conquistadores. The Cavaliers defeated Birmingham twice already and victories on Wednesday and Friday could end up helping them take over sole possession of first place by week’s end. Can’t imagine the Toreadors are going to make things easy, not after gaining a ton of confidence with a huge victory over Chatsworth.

Sure, there’s more than a month left in the regular season. But make no mistake, every win in league play is crucial. Positioning is key. Things should be interesting, regardless. Stay tuned for updates.
