One of the loudest whispers of the baseball season has been the ‘down year’ Chatsworth has been enduring. After losing draft pick candy Mike Moustakas and Matt Dominguez to graduation, a lot of people are quick to point out that the Chancellors aren’t as mighty as they used to be. These same voices also keep insinuating Chatsworth is finally going to let someone else have a crack at being West Valley League champs.

Well, judging by the way Chatsworth powered past El Camino Real, 9-4, on Wednesday afternoon, you better bet your baseballs the Chancellors are still in the hunt for a sixth-consecutive league title.

I know Taft and Cleveland are going to make things very difficult for the Chancellors, and Friday’s re-match with the Conquistadores isn’t going to be easy. But Chatsworth proved Wednesday why it has one of the most potent hitting lineups in the region.

Chatsworth pounded out 14 hits against the Conquistadores, the biggest of which came in the fourth inning off a grand slam by Matt Moreno. I found out after the game Moreno isn’t too into talking about himself or his second homer of the season, but that’s OK -- if you can hit the ball like he does, no one should care if you’re a little short-worded with the press. Moreno finished the day with two hits and five RBIs.

Kasey Toven, Michael Renner, James Wharton and Andrew Klausmeier also had good days at the plate, illustrating the collective strength of the Chancellors’ bats.

Listen to what Chatsworth Coach Tom Meusborn had to say about the victory:
