With pro and college scouts in the stands, Bonita junior Nico Calderaro pitched a perfect game on Monday as the Bearcats beat visiting Diamond Ranch, 5-0, in a Miramonte League contest.

Calderaro (1-1) needed only 72 pitches to achieve perfection. He had 11 strikeouts and allowed only one fly ball to leave the infield.

‘He was dominant,’ said Bonita Coach John Knott, who had never seen a perfect game in person before.

Knott said most of the scouts in attendance were there to see junior shortstop Jiovanni Mier. The scouts got what they wanted as Mier made two great defensive plays in the hole to save the perfect-o. Mier also was 2 for 2 at the plate with two runs scored and four stolen bases.

But it was Calderaro who stole the show. One pro scout, in particularly, wanted to know more about Calderaro after the game, according to Knott.

‘So it was a good day all round,’ Knott said. ‘I’m assuming [the scouts] walked away pleased with the performance of both guys.’

Diamond Ranch won’t have to wait long for a shot at redemption. The Bearcats and Panthers meet again Thursday at Diamond Ranch at 3:15 p.m.
