No school in the City Section has benefited more from open enrollment than Woodland Hills Taft, but LAUSD has begun offering extra classrooms on some campuses to house charter schools, and that could result in the loss of open-enrollment spots for students coming to Taft for athletics and academics.

The open-enrollment slots are cherished by coaches because they allow students who live anywhere in the district to enroll. Many schools use lotteries because too many students apply for the spots. But open-enrollment spots are increasing at some schools. El Camino Real will have close to 100. Birmingham could have 150. Taft doesn’t know how many it will have depending on the district’s recent charter school decision, but it has exceeded 200 in recent years.

Taft’s community is fighting hard to keep its open-enrollment slots. It’s a big deal, and if the school loses the battle, its athletic program will take a huge hit.
