Theft is a crime in our society. In baseball it is adored.

We’re talking about base stealing, of course. Nobody could steal home quite like Jackie Robinson; just ask Yogi Berra. Ty Cobb’s bag-pilfering motto: ‘Spikes high, dammit!’ And Rickey Henderson mastered the art of smash-and-grab base-running.

Now, in the Southland, you had better watch your bases. Because Malachi Moore is on the prowl.

Moore, a senior infielder at Dominguez, has -- get ready for this -- 40 stolen bases in 40 attempts this season, ranking him No. 2 in the nation, according to MaxPreps.com. He has 14 multi-steal games, has swiped four bases in four different contests, and has nearly doubled his steals-to-hits ration, which is 40 to 22. Astounding.

By the way, the nation’s leading base stealer is some kid from South Carolina with 57. Now, come on, how is that possible?

I promise you I will track down Moore next week; well, as long as I can catch up to him.

P.S. I couldn’t resist -- I posted a pic of the Hamburgler.
