Softball: It’s anybody’s game at 26th Woodbridge Classic

Me and my big fat mouth. I popped off that El Modena and Marina -- the two highest-ranked teams in the 26th Woodbridge Classic -- would go on to win the respective Gold and Silver brackets after they met in the opening game of the tournament last weekend.

El Modena, which defeated Marina, promptly lost to No. 25 Foothill on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Gold division, 3-2. El Modena was ranked No. 7 in the Southland by The Times at the time.

Today, the tournament continues with Foothill the highest-ranked team in the tournament, still vying for the championship. Mission Viejo, then ranked No. 15, was beaten in nine innings by North Torrance, 4-3, setting the stage for a potential fifth-place game today between No. 12 El Modena and No. 20 Mission Viejo.

In The Times’ latest rankings, Foothill is joined by a newcomer to the Top 25. Fullerton debuted this week at No. 24 after beating a couple of Trinity League teams, Santa Margarita and Rosary, while Foothill moved up to No. 22.

What’s it all mean?

The Woodbridge Classic championship semifinals at Col. Bill Barber Park get under way at 12:30 p.m. today/Saturday with No. 22 Foothill against Trabuco Hills. That will be followed on the stadium field by North Torrance against No. 24 Fullerton at 2:45 p.m.
