The executive committee of the Southern Section voted 16-1 Wednesday to recommend rejection of a proposal to create separate playoff divisions for private and public schools.

Next week, league members of the Southern Section are scheduled to vote on the proposal by the Century League. They don’t have to follow the executive committee’s recommendation, but the overwhelming vote sends a message that the proposal could be in trouble.

Last week, Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton revealed that CIF legal counsel also recommended rejection of the proposal.
