Seedings held in the men’s open singles and that meant the end of the road for Harvard-Westlake senior Ryan Thacher. The 18-year-old phenom from Studio City won his first two matches on Thursday before falling to second-seeded Lester Cook, 6-3, 7-6(2), in Friday morning’s quarterfinal.

Unable to compete in the CIF singles because he withdrew from that event last year to concentrate on his studies, the Stanford-bound Thacher decided to test himself against older players with professional experience. Once again, as he had in his loss to Switzerland’s Stefane Bohli in the first round of qualifying for last month’s Pacific Life Open, Thacher pushed his opponent to a tiebreaker in the second set.

Cook will meet third-seeded Travis Rettenmaier in one semifinal Saturday morning and top-seeded Brian Wilson will take on No. 4 Cecil Mamiit in the other at Libbey Park.

Thacher wasn’t the only Stanford signee to play in the Open class. Brentwood senior and former Southern Section Individuals champion Logan Hansen (see previous blog) is still alive in the Women’s Open Singles.
