Valencia and Santa Barbara aren’t the only regional volleyball teams that will be playing for championships at Cal State Dominguez Hills this weekend.

Quartz Hill extended its unbeaten streak to 66 games with a 25-15, 32-30, 25-17 triumph over Downey in the Southern Section-Toyota Division III semifinals on Wednesday. It seems as though Quartz Hill’s sports teams have a knack for beating Downey (the baseball team defeated the Vikings on Tuesday). Consequently, the second-seeded Rebels have to be considered the favorite to take what would be their first divisional championship.

As expected, Oak Park and Oaks Christian won their semifinal contests and the cross-town rivals will meet up in the finals for the second time in three years. Oak Park, which I think must be the favorite this time around, defeated Bishop Montgomery, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18. Kevin Cochran’s 16-dig effort helped push Oaks Christian to a 28-26, 25-22, 25-17 triumph over Bishop Diego.

In Division V, second-seeded Viewpoint is heading back to the finals for the fourth consecutive year. Hunter Carlin recorded 16 kills in the Patriots’ 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 victory over Chadwick. They’ll have to get up early to play top-seeded Salesian.
