If you go to a sporting event in which objects fly through the air, you have to pay attention.

During the recent Utah state high school track and field championships in Provo, Ryan McGeeney, a photographer for the Ogden Standard-Examiner, was speared through the leg by a javelin. He was shooting the discus event and, apparently, wandered into an off-limits area set aside for javelin.

At least he got a picture -- of his impaled leg.

I’ve always wondered if anybody has been seriously injured -- or even killed -- by foul balls or flying bats at a baseball game or whizzing pucks at an ice hockey game. I honestly hadn’t given much thought to javelin-related injuries, until now.... Figured most people were throwing ‘em, not catching ‘em.
