Five players from the Southland were drafted Friday in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

Carson Bryant, a right-handed pitcher from Azusa Pacific University who’s from Central California, was taken 745th by the Kansas City Royals, and Raul Rodriguez, a right-handed pitcher from Royal High-- not Simi Valley High-- was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with pick No. 759.

Alex, not Brett, Curry, a right-handed pitcher from Cypress College by way of Canyon High, was selected 756th by the Minnesota Twins, and Billy Nowlin, a catcher from Golden West College by way of Marina High, was selected by the Detroit Tigers with pick No. 763.

Roberto Lopez, an outfielder from USC who’s from the San Diego area, was drafted 768th by the Angels.

If I’ve missed any of our local players who have been drafted out of college, let me know!

UPDATE: Cypress College Sports Information Officer, Teresa Wang, sent me an e-mail letting me know that Curry’s name was Alex, not Brett, as was listed on MLB.com. She said she doesn’t know why his name was listed as Brett, but said I wasn’t the only one to make the mistake. You would think that would make me feel better, but it doesn’t. Sorry, Alex. Hopefully we’re still on good terms.

UPDATE 2: Rodriguez was incorrectly listed on MLB.com as being a student of Simi Valley High. He is actually from Royal High. Thanks for pointing out the error, Elizabeth. Sorry, Raul.
