Baseball: Round 8 of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft

Pitcher Kurt Yacko of Chapman University by way of Mater Dei High was drafted with the 257th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies Friday in Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft. Last season, Yacko was the NCAA Division III co-player of the year.

Malcom Culver, a right-handed pitcher from Palmdale High who has accepted a scholarship to play for Tony Gwynn’s San Diego State Aztecs next season, was selected by the Kansas City Royals with pick No. 235.

Isaac Galloway, a highly touted right-fielder from Los Osos High, was taken by the Florida Marlins with pick No. 238, and Cody Puckett, a shortstop from Cal State Dominguez Hills by way of Hesperia High, was picked 239th by the Cincinnati Reds.

Erik Komatsu, an outfielder from Cal State Fullerton by way of Oxnard College and Camarillo High, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with pick No. 248, and Robert LaFromboise, a left-handed pitcher from the University of New Mexico by way of Rio Hondo College and Warren High, was chosen 252nd by the Seattle Mariners.
