When he was 11, Gerrit Cole went to Arizona with his dad to watch Game 6 and 7 of the 2001 World Series. As luck would have it, the Coles ended up staying in the same hotel as the New York Yankees.

It may not be long before traveling and staying in hotels with the Yankees could be part of his job description. Cole, 17, a senior at Orange Lutheran, was drafted by the Pinstripes with the 28th overall selection of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft on Thursday.

Cole had a sign with him at the game in Arizona that read, ‘Yankee fan today tomorrow forever.’ The Orange Lutheran pitcher still has that sign.

Cole, who has a fastball that is in the mid- to high-90s, is represented by Scott Boras. He signed a letter of intent with UCLA last year. You can check out a video of Cole pitching here.
