After stopping by the office Wednesday afternoon, and then realizing how close Orange County was, I figured it was worth trekking out to the Elite 11 quarterback camp at Soka University in Aliso Viejo to see how Los Osos’ Richard Brehaut and Mission Viejo’s Allan Bridgford were doing.

Besides, with everyone paying so much attention to all the basketball going on in Vegas, the gridiron guys have been somewhat overlooked lately. Another reason for the road trip: I wanted to check out some of the country’s other high-caliber quarterbacks.

Texan Garrett Gilbert was as good as advertised and the 6-foot-4 senior figures to put a smile on the faces of the Longhorns faitfhful once he arrives in Austin to play for Mack Brown. Rutgers-bound Tom Savage from Pennsylvania and Georgia-bound Aaron Murray from Florida were equally impressive.

West Virginia-bound Tajh Boyd from Virginia was a pleasant surprise, as was Auburn-bound Raymond Cotton from Maryland. Ultimately, however, the Southland standouts, Brehaut and Bridgford, stole the show. At least that seemed to be the consensus among Division I scouts and camp instructors in attendance.
