It shouldn’t surprise anyone that former Southland standouts Mike Montgomery, pictured, and Mike Moustakas are tearing it up in the Kansas City Royals’ farm system. In fact, knowing how well the Royals are doing, it’s just a matter of time before these guys will see some time with the parent club.

However, the Kauffman Stadium faithful won’t have to wait long to see Montgomery and Moustakas on the field since both have been selected to participate in the Kansas City Royals’ Futures’ Night on Sept. 19. Each player will sign autographs and take part in an on-field presentation recognizing their achievements this season.

Montgomery, who led Hart last spring to the Foothill League title, finished the season at 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA while playing for the Surprise Royals of the Arizona Rookie League. The southpaw with a 95-mph fastball was selected No. 36 overall in last June’s amateur baseball draft and was recently named the Surprise Royals pitcher of the year.

Moustakas also has seen recognition for his accomplishments.

The former Chatsworth standout was recently honored as the Burlington Bees’ player of the year thanks to his .272 batting average, 22 home runs, 25 doubles and 71 RBIs. Moustakas, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2007 draft, is definitely living up to the sky-high billing he earned in high school.
