Let’s face it -- lots of folks (including me) are expecting big things out of La Salle after seeing Chase Rettig establish himself as one of the area’s best underclassman QBs in 2007.

Unfortunately, Rettig has to get more support from his teammates if La Salle is going to re-emerge as a legitimate division title chaser.

In the Lancers’ season opener against Village Christian, Rettig completed 18 of 37 passes for 237 yards and two TDs, but it wasn’t enough as mistake-prone La Salle fell, 21-18.

Shaky first-game performances are a part of prep football (especially when a new coach is at the helm). However, I was a little surprised the Lancers couldn’t topple a Village Christian squad that barely squeaked into the playoffs last year. Not even an injury to Crusaders starting RB Andrew Canino could stop Village Christian from using big-play bombs to bust apart the Lancers defense.

La Salle is probably miffed this one got away, but Rettig & Co. can find redemption with a victory over a decent Maranatha squad on Friday. Rettig, who passed for 2,500 yards and 25 TDs as a sophomore last year, should have another big game, but what about the rest of the Lancers? It’ll be interesting to see how they respond against the Minutemen.

And speaking of minutes, you can spend a few by looking at this Rettig highlight reel:
