The second year of a new state CIFrule that gives athletes a one-time free transfer before the start of their sophomore year has resulted in a 45% increase in sophomore transfer students in the Southern Section for the month of September, with 240 switching schools last month compared to 165 last year, according to Southern Section statistics.

In September alone, there were 1,016 transfers, including foreign students, valid change of residences and hardships, according to the Southern Section.

Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said the rise in transfers among sophomores is partly due to parents and students becoming more familar with the new rule.
