While it appears Oaks Christian is steamrolling to an unprecedented sixth consecutive Southern Section division title this fall, its state bowl game hopes took a blow last Friday.

Long Beach Poly‘s 12-7 victory over St. Bonaventure means the Seraphs are a lock to play in the Division III state bowl game as long as they capture another Northern Division title (because we know they won’t lose a Channel League game).

Had the Seraphs beaten Poly, there’s a good chance Oaks Christian would have been first in line for a Division III state bowl berth since St. Bonaventure likely would have been the favorite to grab the Open Division bowl berth (again, assuming it won the rest of the way).

Of course, Oaks Christian’s ho-hum schedule will keep it behind St. Bonny if the Seraphs win out, and who knows -- undefeated Gardena Serra is a very talented team that could make life interesting for the Lions if they meet up in the Northwest Division playoffs.

Be sure to check out CalHiSports’ bowl rankings for a complete rundown of the situation.

I hope for Oaks Christian’s sake it renews its rivalry with St. Bonaventure next year because that game could decide who gets Southern California’s Division III bowl berth for years to come. Or, the Lions could just start scheduling games against good teams.
