Taft is going to be the West Valley League football champion after Oliver Johnson returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown, the Toreadors’ second interception of the fourth quarter, giving Taft a 34-22 lead over Birmingham with 41 seconds left.

What a moment for Taft’s 31-year-old coach, Matt Kerstetter, who saw his team blown out by Birmingham last season by scores of 49-14 and 50-7.

But the Toreadors’ defense, led by linebacker Nick Bruce, and the offense, led by D.J. Morgan’s three touchdowns, has put the team in position to get a top-four seeding in the City Section Championship Division playoffs.
