With its starting quarterback injured, Cathedral Coach Kevin Pearson went to plan B on Friday night against unbeaten Gardena Serra and almost pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season. Cathedral switched to a double wing-T attack, ran the ball at will but still lost, 23-22, in overtime.

USC-bound receiver Randall Carroll, pictured, was used as rusher and responded with 165 yards rushing. The Phantoms rushed for more than 400 yards. Ex-Dorsey quarterback Josh Williamson, who has played linebacker all season, filled in well for the injured Shawn Alexander.

The fact Serra (10-0) survived is good news for the Cavaliers, who figure to be the No. 2 seed behind Oaks Chrisian when the Northwest Division playoff pairings are released today. And Cathedral can’t be overlooked either. For one, no one knows if the Phantoms are going to run a double wing-T formation or spread offense in their next game.
