El Camino pulled out a thrilling 35-27 victory over L.A. Marshall on Thursday night in the first round of the City Section Invitational Division playoffs after junior quarterback Ryan Meier scored on a short run in overtime.

The Conquistadores (7-4) intercepted a Marshall pass on second down from the seven-yard line to end the game.

Marshall (7-4) had tied the score with 1 minute 28 seconds left in regulation on a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Christian Hernandez to senior receiver Carlos Portillo and a two-point conversion run by Pilo Monzon.

This came after an unusual ploy by Marshall Coach Andy Moran, who ordered his defense to allow El Camino Real to score because his team was out of timeouts and he didn’t want the Conquistadores’ time-consuming double wing offense to leave his offense with too little time to have an opportunity to score.

El Camino Real advanced to play second-seeded Roosevelt in a quarterfinal Wednesday.
